What Can You Expect?
Every week, I’ll send you an insightful breakdown on a high-level thumbnail. Here’s an example of what you’ll see…
MrBeast
7 Days Stranded On An Island

7 Day Views: 95.4M
Outlier Score: 1.1x
Breakdown:
- There are three main focuses: MrBeast, his arm, and “Day 6.”
- Scuffs, cuts, and bruises and sunken facial expression show the emotional tone that surviving an island will be difficult.
- Textured sand and water add a lot of realism.
Alternates

These alternative thumbnails all used variations of the three same color elements: bright blue water, tropical green trees, and yellow sand.
If you squint your eyes and look at these thumbnails, you instantly understand that this video is “something tropical” because of the color.
Interestingly, these all use “day 6” as text. He didn’t experiment with “day 5” or “day 7.” Each version communicates a similar concept; but, apparently, these didn’t get viewers to watch as much as the winner.
Nick DiGiovanni
World's Spiciest Cooking Challenge

7 Day Views: 3.0M
Outlier Score: 1.0x
Breakdown:
- Orange contrasts well against the black and white. It’s also a color used for recognizing content about “hot” foods.
- Nick’s facial expressions sell his emotional pain.
- This follows a well-known format of “X vs Y.”
Alternates

You can see that Nick D was testing whether he should use Sean Evans or not. As the host of Hot Ones, Sean may bring in a new audience, so it makes sense that Nick would test him in a thumbnail.
Using another person could also give the idea that this is more of a cooking challenge, which could appeal to certain viewers.
Personally, Option B is my favorite.
